➤ The sustainable main material: Trembesi

Trembesi, also known as rain tree wood, originally comes from South America. This means that no rainforests need to be cleared for its harvest in Indonesia. The fast-growing trees are typically planted in urban areas for decorative purposes, where their branches are regularly pruned to control growth. The wood is then repurposed, often for furniture production. Our trembesi wood shares a similar color and grain to teak, but with a much better sustainability profile.

Other material: Rattan

➤ Our production partners: Selected according to fair trade criteria

This stool is handmade in Java, Indonesia.

When selecting our local production partners, we emphasise fair payment, safe working conditions and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small family businesses that have a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are all experienced craftspeople of legal age. Older people in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in handicrafts, allowing them to use the skills they have learnt from an early age to earn money and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are to be able to create something meaningful with this work and earn a good living. As all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process generates hardly any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the companies.

➤ The production process: from raw material to finished stool

Our Subang stools are crafted in the workshops of skilled carpenters in the Central Java province of Indonesia. The wood is first dried and then cut into planks, which are shaped into the legs and seat, before being assembled, sanded, and varnished. The woven seat is supplied by a specialized weaving workshop. Creating a single stool takes around four to five hours and requires a great deal of patience and craftsmanship.
