Materials & craftsmanship
Seagrass used here refers to a palm-like, coastal plant commonly harvested on sandy beaches across tropical Asia. The leaves are separated, cut into strips, sun-dried and handwoven. Banana fibres are taken from the layered trunks of cultivated banana trees. When sun-dried for about a week, the fibres develop an intense brown tone; the strips are then rolled into characteristic strands of approximately 6 mm thickness. Only old, dying banana trees are used, giving the material a second life as a stable, resilient raw material for artisanal products made by Soeji.
The combination of seagrass and banana fibre creates a tactile, natural product that smells and feels of the outdoors. Nylon thread is used for durable stitching. Because each placemat is crafted by hand and built from natural materials, slight variations in size, color and shape are part of the productâs unique character.
Care and use
Wipe clean with a damp cloth; avoid prolonged exposure to moisture to preserve shape and colour. Use indoors or in covered outdoor areas. Can be used as a placemat, tabletop décor, bedside pad, makeup table protector, or mounted as a wall decoration.
Production and ethics
This placemat is handmade in Java, Indonesia. We select local producers who provide fair pay and safe working conditions; only adult, experienced artisans work on our pieces. No harmful chemicals are used in production. Because every step is performed by hand, the manufacturing process generates minimal greenhouse gas emissions. Regular on-site visits and continuous personal contact ensure these standards are upheld.
Notes
Measurements and weight are approximate. Each item is an individual work of art and may vary slightly due to manual production and the natural variation of plant fibres.
