➤ The sustainable main material: Banana fibre
Banana fibre is a natural, untreated plant fibre that feels wonderfully natural. This abundant, renewable raw material comes from banana trees, which are widely cultivated in Indonesia. Its fibrous bark detaches from the trunk as it grows, is then collected and dried under the sun for around a week, creating the intense brown colour naturally. The individual strips are then rolled into the characteristic, approximately 6 mm thick strands, which are processed into traditional basketry by our production partners in Java.
➤ The production process: From raw material to finished basket
For our Rinjani baskets, experienced artisans working with our production partners in Central Java, Indonesia, carefully weave strands of banana fibre by hand around a custom-made wooden frame that defines the exact shape and size of the basket. Using traditional weaving techniques, they craft the decorative pattern with great skill and attention to detail. Each basket takes around one to two hours to complete – a testament to the craftsmanship and care poured into every piece.
➤ Our production partners: Selected according to fair trade criteria
When selecting our local production partners, we emphasise fair payment, safe working conditions and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small family businesses that have a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are all experienced craftspeople of legal age. Older people in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in handicrafts, allowing them to use the skills they have learnt from an early age to earn money and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are to be able to create something meaningful with this work and earn a good living. As all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process generates hardly any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the companies.
